Spring is blooming, the weather is warming, and so is the water in our region. Soon, it will be paddling season on the Rappahannock River and creeks throughout Tappahannock and Essex County.

Several new opportunities are available for paddlers to get out on the water and enjoy floating through the region this year. The Town of Tappahannock is making rapid progress in its effort to develop public access at its Hoskins Creek site. The Hoskins Creek Park Project includes the development of boat docks, a fuel station, and a restaurant with lodging. One place, however, is ready for adventure right now: the townโ€™s new kayak kiosk at the end of Duke Street.

Operated by Rent.Fun, in partnership with the Town of Tappahannock, a kayak kiosk is a handy way for folks to get into the paddling game, even if they donโ€™t have their own boats. By installing an app on their smartphone, aspiring paddlers can quickly pay and access kayaks, paddles, life jackets, and launch from the beach at the end of Duke Street.

From there, paddlers can reach several great destinations: Hoskins Creek is a short distance downriver, on the right. There are excellent birding and photography opportunities, especially in the area above the Tappahannock Trail Bridge (Route 17).

My favorite destination, however, is the Downing Bridge. Itโ€™s refreshing and fun to float under the bridge, especially during the heat of summer, and paddle towards the channel. Once you get to the middle of the bridge, start watching for a pair of cobalt blue birds resting on the bridge supports. They are Peregrine Falcons, known famously as the fastest animals on planet Earth, and our local Tappahannock birds are simply amazing.

The falcons are currently nesting, and in the coming weeks, they will be actively hunting and bringing prey to their nest box for their young. Itโ€™s challenging to get a good photo of these guys, but it can be done. Check out this Falcon Cam from Richmond to sneak a peek at some young falcons.

Paddling is a fun and rewarding way to enjoy the waterโ€”but safety should always come first. According to the American Canoe Association (ACA), wearing a properly fitted life jacket is the simplest and most effective way to stay safe on the water. Before you launch, always check weather and water conditions, including the tide cycle, and be prepared to change your plans if things look risky.

Plan ahead by knowing your route, packing essential gear, and telling someone your plan. Remember, be prepared to get wet! Even a quick dip can be dangerous, and the water in early spring is still cold. Donโ€™t forget to dress for immersion and know how to respond if you or someone else ends up overboard. For even more safety information, expert tips, and free paddling resources, check out the ACAโ€™s Smart Start for Safe Paddling program and free online course.

Driving time to Tappahannock is about an hour from Richmond and Gloucester, and about 1.25 hours from Fredericksburg. After your paddling adventure, there are many nearby local restaurants. Historic Downtown Tappahannock features gift shops, the Essex Museum, and TAG, a gallery featuring local artists.
