Tappahannock’s Beloved Landmark Gains National Recognition, Paving the Way for Restoration and Revival

A treasured piece of Tappahannock’s history has received a well-deserved honor! The iconic DAW Theatre has been officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places, a prestigious designation that cements its significance in both architectural design and cultural heritage.

Originally constructed in 1938-39 and later restored after a fire in 1949, the DAW Theatre stands as a rare surviving example of a pre-World War II entertainment venue in Virginia’s rural Tidewater region. Designed by renowned Virginia architect Edward F. Sinnott, the theater boasts a striking Colonial Revival style, seamlessly complementing the historic charm of downtown Tappahannock.

Sinnott, celebrated for his masterful work on theaters, schools, and civic buildings throughout Virginia, crafted designs that skillfully blended local history with modern functionality. Notably, his influence extended to Black theaters, reflecting his role in shaping entertainment venues that served diverse audiences during the segregation era. The DAW Theatre’s legacy highlights both architectural elegance and the evolving social history of Virginia’s small-town communities.

For decades, the DAW Theatre served as a cultural hub, bringing film and live performances to Essex County and beyond. Despite the segregation laws of the time, the theater made efforts to provide access to Black audiences, with a separate entrance and balcony seating. Films like Stormy Weather (1944), featuring an all-Black cast, were given special reserved showings to ensure fair access for all moviegoers.

“This recognition is a game-changer for preserving the DAW Theatre’s incredible history,” said Dana Bartholomew, president of the DAW Foundation. “So many residents hold cherished memories of this place, and now, with this designation, we can ensure its legacy lives on for future generations.”

As the only commercial building in Essex County with a national historic designation, the DAW Theatre’s restoration is expected to bring a significant boost to the local economy. Plans to revitalize this iconic landmark include transforming it into a dynamic space for cultural events, live performances, and film screenings—offering a new generation of visitors the chance to experience its storied past.

The DAW Foundation has been working tirelessly to restore the theater while integrating modern technology to create a versatile entertainment space. This milestone marks a major step forward in ensuring that the DAW Theatre remains not just a preserved relic, but a thriving, active part of Tappahannock’s future.
