Thomas Downing Bridge

Built in 1963, this bridge that is the gateway to Tappahannock along Route 360 divides Richmond and Essex County and carries more than 14,000 vehicles per day over the Rappahannock River. Prior to the original bridge being built in 1927, only ferries served the area. The bridge is named for State Sen. Thomas Downing.

Just two miles southeast of Tappahannock, Rotary Poor House Park offers two scenic trails for outdoor enthusiasts of all levels. One winds gently through a transitional forest of pines, oaks, and hickories—perfect for families and casual riders. The other provides a slightly more challenging route, with a 60–70 foot elevation drop into the rich riparian habitat along the headwaters of Piscataway Creek. Created in 2015 and revitalized in 2021 with help from volunteers and a Virginia Outdoors Foundation grant, the trails are ready for their best season yet. Access is off Poor House Road, with clear signage and gravel parking.
